Defining Holistic, Integrative and Functional Medicine
Friday Mar 04, 2022
Friday Mar 04, 2022
Hi everyone, I’m super excited to be back with Season 5 of the Holistic Pharmacy Podcast!
And I have some announcements and updates to share with you about what I’ve been up to during the break between seasons.
I’ve partnered with the Pharmacy Podcast Network to expand my reach and to collaborate with like-minded professionals! And I will be changing the format of the podcast to include subject matter expert insights, journal clubs to dissect the latest literature together, and a regular FM segment in addition to bringing you inspiring stories that have always been at the heart of this show.
Joining me today and all season long are my co-hosts Dr. Lauren Castle and Dr. Jenna Carmichael. I interviewed Dr. Castle earlier in season 2, and Dr. Carmichael’s interview will be featured in the very next episode, so stay tuned for that!
We came together to share our perspectives on the various terms we commonly reference when in the realm of caring for our clients’ health. The slew of them can get quite confusing and overwhelming - holistic, natural, naturopathic, integrative, functional, complementary, alternative, not to mention conventional and allopathic!
Join us as we break it down and set the stage for the rest of the season.

This is the first resource guide that catalogues pharmacist and pharmacy-centered SDOH services. The guide provides health care professionals with ideas and examples of SDOH services they can implement and was designed to be widely used in many different settings. The guide provides information on each service’s location, scale, target population, care setting, intervention and outcomes.

Kelsey Hennig '18 is the perfect example of the power of mentorship. In this episode of Occupation Station, Henning talks about the incredible guidance she received while at ACPHS and how she now tries to give that back as a clinical assistant professor at Binghamton University. Hennig was so impressed with the education that she received at ACPHS that she later returned as a PGY2 resident to learn more about the transitions of care field. From her experiences both as a student and now as a teacher, Hennig has a clear view of what is required for a successful learning environment. A Doctor’s Nutrition System to Prevent and Reverse Disease
Wednesday Feb 23, 2022
Wednesday Feb 23, 2022
A special interview with Dr. Philip Ovadia, MD
What foods to put on your table so you don’t end up on mine
For the past century, we’ve been bombarded with diet ads and advice from gurus and governments. Yet heart disease remains the #1 killer worldwide, and 88% of adults are metabolically unhealthy. Up to 95% of dieters gain back all the weight they lost while following both dietary guidelines and popular fitness fads.
Here’s why they fail.
Most diet books teach you to set short-term weight loss goals. Whether low-carb or low-fat, the typical plan goes like this: restrict your food choices, exercise until exhaustion, and swallow stacks of supplements. These “solutions” do a better job of lightening your wallet than lightening you.
Meanwhile, the healthcare industry fails to prevent chronic disease. Rather than showing people how to remain healthy and prevent illness through proper nutrition, the system offers drugs and surgery to manage symptoms.
As a heart surgeon who used to be morbidly obese, Dr. Philip Ovadia has seen firsthand the failures of mainstream diets and medicine. He realized that what helped him lose over 100 pounds was the same solution that could have prevented most of the thousands of open heart surgeries he has performed—metabolic health.
What you eat determines how long and how well you live. Yet most doctors don’t learn that in medical school. And pharmaceutical companies and food manufacturers have a vested interest in the public not knowing how to live and eat metabolically healthy.
In Stay off My Operating Table, Dr. Ovadia shares the complete metabolic health system to prevent disease and optimize your health, a system that the diet and drug industries don’t want you to know about. Unlike quick-fix, “7-day,” radical diets, Dr. Ovadia’s approach is a sustainable, long-term solution that works. This book teaches:
How most leading causes of death are rooted in metabolic disease
How to measure and improve your metabolic health, from a doctor’s perspective
How to eliminate your need for most supplements with a nutritionally complete diet
How to eat metabolically healthy on any diet, from carnivore to vegan
How light, everyday exercises benefit you more than brutal workouts
How metabolic health holds the answer to most health, food, and fitness questions
Whether you’ve suffered from chronic diseases or want to prevent them decades from now, Stay off My Operating Table will help you take back control of your health from the institutions and experts that have failed you.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, there are more than 50 Cytochrome P450 enzymes but there are just 6 of them that metabolize about 90% of the drugs. One of the most significant ones is the CYP2D6. In an article on healio written by Dr. Jai Patel, he talks about CYP2D6 metabolizing many of the SSRIs, SNRIs and TCAs that are the treatment options for depression. The clearance of TCA’s for example is 50-67% lowered in CYP2D6 poor metabolizers compared to normal.

On this episode of the DarshanTalks Podcast, host DarshanKulkarni Pharm.D, MS, Esq. and guest William A.Soliman, Ph.D., BCMAS and Founder, CEO of the ACMA, talk about Leadership and Growth in Medical Affairs. The ACMA provides data & tech solutions for Medical Affairs and the MSL space in the life sciences industry. The conversation started off with a CEO of better.com firing 900 employees on a zoom call and what leadership had to do in a world wherein people don't usually have one-on-one meetings. Point of leadership and good leaders are straightforward and honest with their team members as per the expert. They then put emphasis on building relationships in medical affairs. Also, building relationship with team is equally important, while being remote how one can build a relationship and rapport online due to the unavoidable situation. According to William trust is a crucial aspect in building relationships and trust can be build by experiences. There are no particular leadership lessons/training taught or perceived in general and they have to be learnt on their own or by experiences. The key element of the conversation was ultimately every person is motivated differently, some people are motivated by recognition and some are by money, etc. as a leader one needs to figure out what works for them and what cluster or team they are on. Making sure that the employer-employee conversation has been done and what really motivates them eventually to perform for better results. The host asked William about leading a MSL team and their programs related to leadership.
