The Great Road Trip Recap with Bruce Kneeland
Sunday Dec 12, 2021
Sunday Dec 12, 2021
Pharmacy pioneer Bruce Kneeland selects 4 road trip pharmacies
The trip, dubbed “Four Savvy Southern Pharmacies,” will include on-site visits and interviews with the owners of pharmacies in Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee and South Carolina.
Summary written by Sandra Levy
Independent pharmacy veteran Bruce Kneeland is once again hitting the open road on an extensive pharmacy road trip. This year's trip, dubbed “Four Savvy Southern Pharmacies,” will include on-site visits and interviews with the owners of pharmacies in four southern states: Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee and South Carolina.
Liberty Software, is sponsoring the trip.
[Read more: Pharmacy pioneer Bruce Kneeland selects 8 road trip pharmacies]
The key takeaway will be the production and distribution of a white paper that Kneeland will produce. The document will outline, in a step-by-step manner, the management tools and marketing techniques the four pharmacies use to successfully implement one or more of the enhanced care services their pharmacies provide.
Kneeland will look at how these four pharmacies chose a specific enhanced care service to provide and how they got their staff to buy into providing the new service. He also will look for ways the pharmacies use features in their Liberty Software system to support these new services.
One of Liberty’s newest features is an appointment scheduler with features that help them manage their immunization program, interact with state immunization registries, automate billing procedures and auto-populate eCare plans.
[Read more: CPESN USA taps Bruce Kneeland to support local networks]
The pharmacies Kneeland will visit provide a cross-section of independent pharmacies. One is in a major metropolitan area, another in a suburban location and two are in rural towns. Two are clinically focused and the others have more traditional front-ends. One even has an old fashion soda fountain.
The four pharmacies to be visited are Flower Mound Pharmacy in Flower Mound, Texas; Caldwell Pharmacy in Wynne, Ark.; Kirby Whitten Pharmacy in Bartlett, Tenn.; and Roche Pharmacy in Whitmire, S.C.
Kneeland noted that the white paper will be designed to provide pharmacy owners with a road map that will outline specific steps pharmacy owners can take to replicate the success of the four pharmacies he visits on the trip. When completed, the white paper will be made available, free of charge, to any pharmacy owner requesting it from Liberty Software

For thirty-five years, George S. Zorich worked as a pharmaceutical executive. Along the way, he served on several pharmacy boards, including the ASHP and that of the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy. He always found it surprising that graduates were very skilled at clinical pharmacy but not entrepreneurship. His book Entrepreneurs in Pharmacy and Other Leaders will become a useful text for pharmacy students and faculty alike under the new ACPE mandate that pharmacy programs teach entrepreneurship. Section one of the book profiles ten professionals who launched their own innovative businesses from a pharmacy degree. Section two highlights thirty people who became leaders in health care with their pharmacy degrees. Zorich is donating all of the royalties to pharmacy programs and foundations that encourage and foster entrepreneurship.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services: Fifty-five percent of the elderly are non-compliant with their prescription drug orders, meaning they don't take their medication according to the doctor's instructions. Approximately 200,000 older adults are hospitalized annually due to adverse drug reactions.
Special guest:
Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) President and CEO Alan Rosenbloom
Washington, DC – Today, House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) and minority committee members lawmakers will hold a forum to discuss the impact of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) in pharmaceutical markets with industry experts, pharmacists, physicians, and PBMs. In anticipation of the forum the Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) offered the following statement from SCPC President and CEO Alan Rosenbloom:
“We welcome today’s forum to examine PBMs and their anti-competitive practices, which ultimately drive-up costs for patients and put independent pharmacies out of business. A handful of PBMs dominate the market, and most are part of much larger health care conglomerates that spread both horizontally and vertically to encompass prescription drug plans and health insurers, retail, specialty, mail order, and long-term care (LTC) pharmacies, giving them immense power to favor the pharmacies they own over the pharmacies they don’t. This forces some pharmacies, especially LTC pharmacies, to provide life-saving medications to patients at a cost that could put them out of business and threaten patient access to essential medications, particularly in rural and medically underserved communities.
Older Americans with long-term care needs require an average of 12-14 prescriptions per year. They are particularly vulnerable to soaring drug prices, and often least able to adapt when local pharmacies close. This is especially true of Medicare beneficiaries who need long-term care and typically have chronic or medically complex conditions as well. This group requires the medication management and enhanced pharmacy services that LTC pharmacies provide. Any unfair PBM practices that inhibit LTC pharmacy services or force them to close can be life-threatening for the hundreds of thousands of patients they serve daily.
Today is a great first step and we thank Rep. James Comer (R-KY) for holding this important forum. Future inquiries must be bipartisan, and since LTC pharmacies and their patients are uniquely impacted by PBMs, we urge Congress to include LTC pharmacies in policy conversations like this one. Congress must pass legislation that requires transparency in PBM drug pricing and related information and provides stronger oversight to hold PBMs accountable.”
