Swit is a long-time FDA regulatory Attorney and Chief Regulatory Counsel at Varian Medical Systems. He has taught and written on an array of subjects relating to FDA regulation and related commercial activities, including directing courses on FDA regulation of drug/device advertising and on generic drug approvals. A former member of the Food & Drug Law Journal Editorial Board, Mr. Swit has spoken frequently at conferences sponsored by such organizations as RAPS, FDLI, and DIA. Swit is a highly experienced food & drug law attorney who has addressed critical FDA legal issues since 1984. His vast experience includes serving as general counsel and secretary of Par Pharmaceutical, a prominent generic drug company, and, thus, he brings a commercial perspective to his work. His private practice has included stints in the FDA Law Practice Groups in the San Diego offices of both Duane Morris and Heller Ehrman, and at McKenna & Cuneo (now Dentons), in the firm's D.C. and San Diego offices. He also served for seven years as Vice President at The Weinberg Group, a premier FDA regulatory consulting firm, and as the CEO of FDAnews.com, a premier publisher of FDA newsletters and other information products.
In the initial part of the podcast, he described how to do the Varian Company functions and its role in medical affairs. At Varian, he spearheads the resolution of all legal issues impacting the regulatory, quality, and clinical challenges of the world's leading developer of radiation treatment technologies used to treat cancer and other conditions, including overseeing the firm's promotional review process. The company's aim is 'creating a world without the fear of cancer'. He mentioned every company makes mistakes or sometimes customers think that the company has done something wrong and every sphere will have a problem that is unavoidable but how to respond and the key element to tackle those circumstances that determines everything. He works in the compliance department resolving disputes and problems. The mid-segment was about the work processes and balance, then he was asked about the SOPs in medical affairs i.e. standard operating procedures for clinical practice, he had prime approaches for the same - policies, SOPs, granular work construction, and it ought to be automation. He also mentioned mnemonic words that are important in this sphere. The conversation also included The Chicago Tylenol scandal ( these were a series of poisoning deaths resulting from drug tampering in the Chicago metropolitan area in 1982) concerning crisis management and how one can do a right recall. Lastly, they touched upon the influencer marketing aspect.

For thirty-five years, George S. Zorich worked as a pharmaceutical executive. Along the way, he served on several pharmacy boards, including the ASHP and that of the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy. He always found it surprising that graduates were very skilled at clinical pharmacy but not entrepreneurship. His book Entrepreneurs in Pharmacy and Other Leaders will become a useful text for pharmacy students and faculty alike under the new ACPE mandate that pharmacy programs teach entrepreneurship. Section one of the book profiles ten professionals who launched their own innovative businesses from a pharmacy degree. Section two highlights thirty people who became leaders in health care with their pharmacy degrees. Zorich is donating all of the royalties to pharmacy programs and foundations that encourage and foster entrepreneurship.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services: Fifty-five percent of the elderly are non-compliant with their prescription drug orders, meaning they don't take their medication according to the doctor's instructions. Approximately 200,000 older adults are hospitalized annually due to adverse drug reactions.
Special guest:
Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) President and CEO Alan Rosenbloom
Washington, DC – Today, House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) and minority committee members lawmakers will hold a forum to discuss the impact of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) in pharmaceutical markets with industry experts, pharmacists, physicians, and PBMs. In anticipation of the forum the Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) offered the following statement from SCPC President and CEO Alan Rosenbloom:
“We welcome today’s forum to examine PBMs and their anti-competitive practices, which ultimately drive-up costs for patients and put independent pharmacies out of business. A handful of PBMs dominate the market, and most are part of much larger health care conglomerates that spread both horizontally and vertically to encompass prescription drug plans and health insurers, retail, specialty, mail order, and long-term care (LTC) pharmacies, giving them immense power to favor the pharmacies they own over the pharmacies they don’t. This forces some pharmacies, especially LTC pharmacies, to provide life-saving medications to patients at a cost that could put them out of business and threaten patient access to essential medications, particularly in rural and medically underserved communities.
Older Americans with long-term care needs require an average of 12-14 prescriptions per year. They are particularly vulnerable to soaring drug prices, and often least able to adapt when local pharmacies close. This is especially true of Medicare beneficiaries who need long-term care and typically have chronic or medically complex conditions as well. This group requires the medication management and enhanced pharmacy services that LTC pharmacies provide. Any unfair PBM practices that inhibit LTC pharmacy services or force them to close can be life-threatening for the hundreds of thousands of patients they serve daily.
Today is a great first step and we thank Rep. James Comer (R-KY) for holding this important forum. Future inquiries must be bipartisan, and since LTC pharmacies and their patients are uniquely impacted by PBMs, we urge Congress to include LTC pharmacies in policy conversations like this one. Congress must pass legislation that requires transparency in PBM drug pricing and related information and provides stronger oversight to hold PBMs accountable.”

What does public health mean to you? Public health is the intersection where individual patient decisions meet public policy, where medicine meets law.
Bio
Output Medical was founded by Dr. Jay K Joshi as an Intern managing complex Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients. Concerned by the limitations of manual urine output measurements and subsequent kidney care management, he set out to develop a technology that would improve the measuring and recording of urine output to help patients with kidney injury or kidney failure.
Born out of a need to improve urine output measurements, Output Medical is passionate about kidney management and saving patient lives.
Abnormally low urine output (known as oliguria) is a leading indicator of acute kidney injury (AKI) among ICU patients. AKI is a rapid and dangerous loss of kidney function which seriously impacts a patient's quality of care: it increases mortality, cost of care, length of stay, and readmission. AKI occurs in 20% of all ICU admissions each year, meaning approximately two million patients in the U.S. for whom regular and automatic urine output monitoring could improve their health. The average additional cost of a patient with AKI is nearly $16,000, a significant cost to patients and hospitals.

Pharmacogenomics and Provider Status with Scott Knoer | PGX for Pharmacists
Monday Nov 15, 2021
Monday Nov 15, 2021
According to the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), community pharmacists are highly accessible health care professionals and 95% of Americans live within just 5 miles of a pharmacy. (https://ncpa.org/provider-status) And what APhA or American Pharmacist Association, the largest association of pharmacists in the US is doing is laser focusing on getting provider status for pharmacists. So why is that important when it comes to PGx as this is a PGx podcast? Pharmacists can order the PGx test when they see fit for their patients without the need of a clinician to sign that form.
Scott Knoer, MS, PharmD, FASHP, became the 13th Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Pharmacists Association in June 2020, after serving for nine years as the Chief Pharmacy Officer at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Knoer is a passionate advocate for patients and the profession of pharmacy. He has successfully lobbied boards of pharmacy in Ohio and Minnesota to allow the advancement of pharmacy practice, and he has led initiatives that changed Ohio and federal law related to the elevation of pharmacy practice and reducing the impact of drug shortages. He received his BA in psychology from Creighton University and his PharmD from the University of Nebraska.

Right to Therapeutic Choice | DarshanTalks
Saturday Nov 13, 2021
Saturday Nov 13, 2021
In this episode of DarshanTalks Podcast, the host Darshan Kulkarni Pharm.D, MS, Esq. and Guest Speaker Lewis A. Grossman discuss the Right to Therapeutic Choice. Lewis A. Grossman's recently launched book "Choose Your Medicine: Freedom of Therapeutic Choice in America" on the freedom of medicine in the USA. Lewis Grossman, Author, Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP (https://www.cov.com/) and Professor of Law at American University, Washington College of Law, had spoken about government interference in the 19th century on the healthcare industry.
The conversation started off with the expert explaining his newly launched book based on freedom of therapeutic choices in America that is affected in American law and policy. The compelled speech doctrine sets out the principle that the government cannot force an individual or group to support certain expressions, this was discussed with compelled action which initially the host gave an example of how cigarette advertisements portray and mention that cigarettes are injurious to health whilst asking the expert to share his insights over this topic. He explains his constitutional law perspective on this subject that what government can make you do and what it cannot, he also mentioned about commercial speech is not protected as supposed to political speech or artistic speech.
The conversation also included an interesting topic of off-labeling drugs and ancient drugs like hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin used to treat Covid-19. Furthermore, if the branded company would have endorsed or used these drugs the implications are discussed in this podcast. Also, the subject of monoclonal antibodies was discussed, monoclonal antibodies are proteins created in a lab. The proteins mimic your immune system and are meant to make COVID-19 disease milder in patients who are already sick. As per the expert, the monoclonal antibodies are disseminated by EUA and not FDA approved, highly expensive. They talked about the history of sciences, pharma history, and much more differentiating with the bio-hacking, monoclonal antibodies, hydroxychloroquine, and ivermectin being in the same spectrum. In the mid-segment, what constitutes to be bad-advertisements and how the FDA now is disseminating about bad-ad to the medical industry.
