Changing Your Life as a Pharmacist | Dr. Jamie Wilkey | PGX for Pharmacists
Thursday Sep 02, 2021
Thursday Sep 02, 2021
Jamie grew up in a small town in Wyoming where she got her start in pharmacy working at the local City Drug. She attended the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy for her Doctor of Pharmacy. For 10 years post-graduation Jamie worked in community pharmacy while having and raising her 4 little boys. However, a young family and community pharmacy work schedules are not highly compatible, so in 2020 Jamie created her own job for herself that better suits her talents, her passions, and her family’s busy schedule. She abruptly jumped out of retail and into the world of entrepreneurship and has found her true calling in life. She is the founder & CEO of Arches Health, LLC, and serves there as a precision medicine consultant pharmacist focusing on pharmacogenomics.
After getting her practice up and running she turned around and began promoting and empowering pharmacists to champion PGx and create their own consulting practices through her PGx Consulting Confidence Academy. Dr. Wilkey is a member of CPIC as well as the nonprofit organization GTMR.

Expanding PGx Education Programs | PGX for Pharmacists
Tuesday Aug 31, 2021
Tuesday Aug 31, 2021
Implementing Pharmacogenomics into the Education of the PharmD
How do interested faculty start a program for PGx education at their own school?
Today’s episode builds on the experiences of David Hurley in developing a PGx program at the Gatton College of Pharmacy. His training provides ALL first year students with free PGx testing coordinated with Biochemistry coursework. As we will discuss, making a workable program starts with discovering what PGx resources are available at your institution. Careful understanding of faculty and student abilities and needs are the foundation for making PGx education successful.
Our guest today, Dr. David Hurley, has democratized Pharmacogenomics education for his first year PharmD students. As a Biochemistry professor at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University, Dave immerses pharmacy students with PGx training and free testing in their first semester of the curriculum. In two previous episodes, we’ve discussed how he accomplished this task and his surveys of student attitudes and interest. Today’s episode will provide some of the lessons Dave learned about how to implement PGx education that might be useful for those of you who are starting your own program.

Children & COVID 19 Vaccines | The Pediatric Pharmacist Review
Monday Aug 30, 2021
Monday Aug 30, 2021
We launch the first podcast episode of the Pediatric Pharmacist Review, with our host Dr. Allison Chung, PharmD & Pediatric Critical Care Pharmacist, BCPPS Certified at University of South Alabama Health.
Guest: Dr. Benjamin Estrada
Topic: COVID 19 vaccines in pediatrics:
How the different COVID vaccines work.
Current information and research on the vaccine’s safety and efficacy in pediatric patients.
Has it been tested to the same extent that other vaccines are tested on children?
Will the COVID vaccine recommendations include patients younger than 14? When do we think this will happen?
What do you say to people who understand that younger patients are less likely to get COVID and less severe symptoms so therefore do not want their children to receive the vaccine?
Long term affects of the COVID vaccine on children. Any potential for autism or infertility?
Risk vs benefit of COVID vaccine vs getting COVID in children. Many people feel the risk of getting the vaccine is worse because the risk for COVID in children is less and severity of COVID symptoms are less than adults.
Suggestions for how pharmacists can encourage vaccination in the pediatric population.
At the F.D.A.’s urging, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna are expanding their trials for children 5 to 11.
NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/26/us/politics/fda-covid-vaccine-trials-children.html
At the urging of federal regulators, two coronavirus vaccine makers are expanding the size of their clinical trials for children ages 5 to 11 — a precautionary measure designed to detect rare side effects including heart inflammation problems that turned up in vaccinated people younger than 30.
President Biden promised at a meeting in Ohio last week that emergency clearance for pediatric vaccines would come “soon,” but the White House has not been specific on the timeline. It was unclear whether expanding the studies will affect when vaccines could be authorized for children.
The Food and Drug Administration has indicated to Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna that the size and scope of their pediatric studies, as initially envisioned, were inadequate to detect rare side effects. Those include myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, and pericarditis, inflammation of the lining around the heart, multiple people familiar with the trials said.
Questions about vaccinating children — including those under 12 — are of huge interest to parents and teachers. Regulators will be required to balance potential side effects of coronavirus vaccination against the risks of Covid-19.

USP 800: Budgeting for the Build
We all know that the adoption of USP 800 has been banging around for what seems like ages. I have been talking to people like Bryan about it for over a year. Bryan and I specifically have been discussing the budgeting issues and misconceptions there are regarding upgrading to USP 800, so I was particularly excited to do this podcast.
I think it’s a really important issue and I believe that 503A really need to start moving towards USP 800 compliance but need a realistic idea of the process and what that is going to cost them. In addition to our conversation about t the budgeting issues I think one of my biggest takeaways was the need to work as a unified team and have an experienced team leader.

What is pass through funding for residency programs and why is it so important?

Can speak about ASHP’s work with CMS to make the guidance more apparent to other programs moving forward?
What will be the downstream effect of this case on residency programs in the future?
Can you break down the practice for our listeners?
What are the concerns with white bagging?
What are the steps being taken at the state and federal level to take action to the concerns related to white bagging?
Co-signing letter to the FDA
Leveraging PELA and SPPL; can you explain?
Partnership with AHA
Provider status
Can you talk about the work ASHP has done to ensure that pharmacists can provide Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
At the end of April the US House and Senate introduced the Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act. A similar bill has been submitted for the past couple of years. Can you walk us through the history of this bill? What it would allow pharmacists to do? Why it is so important for the Country? Statistics?
This bill continues to have bipartisan support. What do we need to do as pharmacists to finally get this passed?
COVID-19 and its effect on provider status and Advocacy
Since the start of COVID-19 we’ve seen congress put forth bills and amendments that outline the healthcare response to the pandemic. One such amendment to the PREP Act outlined that “any physician, advanced practice registered nurse, registered nurse, or practical nurse” who had a license within the last 5 years could participate in the vaccination effort, even if the license was inactive. Pharmacists were left out of this amendment originally. I believe that has since been updated, but what is it that we need to be doing as individuals within the profession to help government officials to understand the worth of pharmacists and consider them as a primary focus in any further legislation?
