Today I have a returning guest on the show, Dr. Frieda Wiley, who was on Episode 15 of Season 4. (Listen here: https://www.drmarinabuksov.com/s04e15-writing-your-own-path-w-dr-frieda-wiley/) We talk about the impact of working from home, and what it means for our overall well being, productivity, and social norms - both pre- and post-pandemic. Frieda Wiley, PharmD, suffered some hard knocks working from home, so she’s written a book to guide how to handle this emerging trend and paradigm - from personal experience. The COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed the world in many ways—and some for the better. For one thing, it created a safe space for people to finally have some very candid conversations about mental health. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Wiley found herself struggling with mental and physical health while working remotely, and it took her months to discover solutions and recuperate. In her book, “Telecommuting Psychosis: From surviving to thriving while working in your pajama pants,” Dr. Wiley shares her fool-proof tips on how to manage your time, be more productive, set healthy professional boundaries, and protect (and possibly improve) your physical and emotional health. She also shares the research to support it. Whether you’re a single Generation X-er or a busy parent managing a household, this book offers solutions for everyone to thrive in a remote environment. Dr. Frieda Wiley is a licensed pharmacist-turned-freelance medical writer and medical journalist who has written for O, The Oprah Magazine, US News & World Report, Merck, and the National Institutes of Health. She was recently based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Learn more about the book and preorder here: https://friedawiley.com/books/ (Coming soon to Amazon!)

Important Considerations for End of Year Tax Planning
Section 179 and More
Now is the time of year when people start thinking about how to wrap up their tax year in the best way possible. End of year tax planning is key to this process.
Section 179 is especially appealing because small businesses have the ability to deduct the full purchase price of equipment or software the year the equipment is purchased and deduct the full purchase price from their taxable earnings and before paying off the loan. Having the equipment immediately means they can start earning a profit and keep their working capital healthy if purchased with a loan or on a lease.
Before we delve deeper into some of the specifics around Section 179, let’s talk to a pharmacy owner who has used these benefits to significantly grow his pharmacy business.

When Nashville identified its first case of coronavirus in March 2020, the city was between Public Health Department directors and as unprepared as the rest of the world for what was to come. Dr. Alex Jahangir, a trauma surgeon acting at that time as chair of the Metro Nashville Board of Health, unexpectedly found himself head of the city's COVID-19 Task Force and responsible for leading it through uncharted waters. What followed was a year of unprecedented challenge and scrutiny. Dr. Jahangir, who immigrated to the US from Iran at age six, grew up in Nashville. He thought he knew the city well. But the pandemic laid bare ethnic, racial, and cultural tensions that daily threatened to derail what should have been a collective effort to keep residents healthy and safe.Hot Spot is Dr. Jahangir's narrative of the first year of COVID, derived from his op notes (the journal-like entries surgeons often keep following operations) and expanded to include his personal reflections and a glimpse into the inner sanctums of city and state governance in crisis.
