The State of PGx Education (Part 2) | PGX for Pharmacists
Wednesday Jun 23, 2021
Wednesday Jun 23, 2021
PART TWO: Pharmacogenomics Education is critical to advancing the Pharmacist's optimal impact on medication management as a tool to ensure the drugs prescribed work as intended.
The State of the Industry -- Pharmacogenomics Education
Clinical pharmacogenomics activities may include designing patient-specific drug and dosage regimens based on genetic profile, documenting clinical recommendations, educating pharmacists and other health care professionals, and recommending testing
Advanced training in pharmacogenomics may open up more practice opportunities for pharmacists, such as developing clinical decision support tools in electronic health record systems that guide prescribers on appropriate drug therapy regimens based on genetic profiles. Additionally, pharmacists can develop institutional guidelines and processes for implementing clinical pharmacogenomics services into various practice settings.
Pharmacists can also develop patient education materials to explain the significance of the tests and serve as expert consultants in a pharmacogenomics service.
Special guest: David Hurley PhD.
David Hurley grew up in Dunwoody, GA, then earned a BS in Biology and Physics from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, in 1979. The Un-Scripted Podcast, episode two is a conversation with: Charlie Oltman, Program Director, NCPDP Foundation Dr. Samantha Pitts, assistant professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Tolu Akinwale, Manager of E-Prescribing, Walgreens Michelle Chui, PharmD, PhD, FAPhA, Hammel-Sanders Professor, Social & Administrative Sciences Division, Director, Health Services Research in Pharmacy PhD Program, Director, Sonderegger Research Center for Improved Medication Outcomes, University of Wisconsin – Madison, School of Pharmacy Recently, a group of health IT leaders came together to discuss the need for CancelRx and the value it delivers far beyond the seemingly simple cancellation of a prescription. The participants in this podcast were part of a study in partnership with UW Health to evaluate the effectiveness of CancelRx to decrease medication discrepancies. Learn more: https://surescripts.com/enhance-prescribing This podcast is a call to action on the broader healthcare industry to standardize digital processes to help remove admin burden and increase patient safety. A highlight from the study: The results of UW Health’s system-wide CancelRx implementation were impressive. Before CancelRx, only about 34% of prescriptions that were discontinued in the clinical setting were also cancelled in the pharmacy. After CancelRx went live, the proportion of successful discontinuations jumped drastically to 93%. Additionally, the amount of time it took to discontinue a medication plummeted from approximately 12 hours to virtually no time at all. Never Pay the First Bill | PBM Reform Podcast Series
Friday Jun 18, 2021
Friday Jun 18, 2021
Special interview w/ award-winning ProPublica reporter Marshall Allen, a primer for anyone who wants to fight the predatory health care system--and win.
We welcome back two patriots in PBM Reform on the interview w/ Marshall.
Monique Whitney - CEO of Pharmacists United for Truth & Transparency and PUTT President and Pharmacy Owner Scott Newman.
Every year, millions of Americans are overcharged and underserved while the health care industry makes record profits. We know something is wrong, but the layers of bureaucracy designed to discourage complaints make pushing back seem impossible. At least, this is what the health care power players want you to think.
Never Pay the First Bill is the guerilla guide to health care the American people and employers need. Drawing on 15 years of investigating the health care industry, reporter Marshall Allen shows how companies and individuals have managed to force medical providers to play fair, and shows how you can, too. He reveals the industry's pressure points and how companies and individuals have fought overbilling, price gouging, insurance denials, and more to get the care they deserve. Laying out a practical plan for protecting yourself against the system's predatory practices, Allen offers the inspiration you need and tried-and-true strategies such as:
Analyze and contest your medical bills, so you don't pay more than you should
Obtain the billing codes for a procedure in advance
Write in an appropriate treatment clause before signing financial documents
Get your way by suing in small claims court
Few politicians and CEOs have been willing to stand up to the medical industry. It is up to the American people to equip ourselves to fight back for the sake of our families--and everyone else.

New Roles & Regulations for Pharmacy Technicians | Pharmacy Podcast Nation
Monday Jun 14, 2021
Monday Jun 14, 2021
The Role of the Pharmacy Technician is changing along with the new demands on pharmacists. We discuss the new regulations on Pharmacy Techs with James Broughel, Ph.D. Senior Research Fellow with Mercatus Center at George Mason University
Op-Ed Pharm. Tech Regulation
James recently wrote an op-ed in the Hill newspaper – a paper read by a lot of people working on Capitol Hill and in government – about putting President Biden’s pharmacy plan into action. This was the President saying he wanted everyone to be able to receive the COVID vaccine by April 19.
In the article, James wrote that there is more “that can be done to improve the workings of the pharmacy program. One option is to expand the number of trained pharmacy staff allowed to perform vaccinations.”
Have different states taken different approaches with respect to how they’ve treated pharmacies during the pandemic? Is there a best and/or worst approach?
Paper on Pharm. Tech Regulation
James also wrote a recent paper on Pharmacy Technician Ratio Requirements, which talks about how many states limit the number of pharmacy technicians permitted to work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist at any given time. And we all probably know that with COVID-19, many states with these regulations have relaxed these rules. You wrote that having less restrictive regulation could actually be an important way to advance public health.

The Pharmacist - Dan Schneider | PAIN POD
Thursday Jun 10, 2021
Thursday Jun 10, 2021
How many times a day are YOU asked if you’re the pharmacist? Countless!
Well join us in this episode of the PAIN POD while Mark “Pain Guy” Garofoli chats with literally THE Pharmacist, Dan Schneider, famous for all of his amazing efforts within the Opioid Crisis, as highlighted on the Netflix series “THE Pharmacist”.
Every 7 minutes an American dies of a drug overdose, and that’s soon to be every 5 or 6 minutes based on upcoming data confirmation. Conversely, every 30 minutes a baby is born dependent, not addicted, to opioids. Headline after headline sensationalizes a reality that many times heroin utilizers begin their respective diacetylmorphine (that’s Heroin folks!) utilization via prescription opioids. Check out this JAMA article as the foundation for so very many headlines: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/fullarticle/1874575.
Dan Schneider’s life work, and “story”, were first highlighted in this article: https://www.nola.com/news/crime_police/article_934b7d20-a78a-535a-8691-26cfc7f9bee7.html, and he joins us in this podcast to dive much, much deeper into the saga, culminating with avenues for all of us to join the efforts, via his “Tunnel of Hope” organization: https://tunnelofhope.org/.
How did we get into the “War on Drugs”, or perhaps better yet, how in the world do we get ourselves out? There’s 330 million Americans waking up everyday, living day in and day out as the solution. If every one of us helped one person, imagine the world.
So listen in to this episode of the PAIN POD now, to hear THE Pharmacist chat with the Pain Guy, in an effort to do just that, help save and improve lives, one at a time!

Pharmacy Industry Living Legend: Joe Moose | Pharmacy Crossroads
Wednesday Jun 09, 2021
Wednesday Jun 09, 2021
Joe Moose, R.Ph., is the co-owner of 8 community pharmacies in North Carolina. He is a true innovator and leader in pharmacy. He was honored in 2015 as the NCPA Independent pharmacist of the year. In this episode of PharmacyCrossRoads, Joe shares examples of how and why independent community pharmacy can play a critical role in helping control the opioid pandemic. He says while COVID has dominated the profession for a year or more that the opioid issue is still a critical issue and deserves the attention and offers a few ideas on what types of things can be done.
Joe also is also a proponent of pharmacies working together to perform healthcare services and capture the data that demonstrates that community pharmacy can be beneficial to payers. His point being that only by having hundreds of pharmacies doing this in a coordinated fashion can we capture the attention of payers.
He also shares creative ideas on how personal home delivery, if done right, can help open the door for performing health risk assessments and also allow community pharmacies to being reimbursed for supporting the emerging field of social determinates of health.
And, while not a topic of the podcast Joe Moose is a leader in the CPESN movement. I was able to write a two-part article – Six Things Every Pharmacist Should Now About CPESN – for ComputerTalk for the Pharmacist Magazine where I quote Joe on a few issues. A digital copy of both articles is available to PharmacyCrossRoads listeners by emailing BFKneeland@gmail.com with CPESN Article in the subject line.

Just because something doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. That’s what will set you apart from others when trying to build something new. Health care is always changing. Position yourself to be in the forefront of medicine.

We are a group of practicing pharmacists throughout the U.S. who have organized a mutual aid movement entitled #PharmGradWishlist (Twitter: @PharmGradWish) that aims to support emerging pharmacist trainees who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color). People who identify as Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and American Indian/Alaska Native are underrepresented in the Pharmacy profession, which can perpetuate health disparities.
