The Challenges and Opportunities of Health System Pharmacists
When the general public thinks of a pharmacist, they may think of the pharmacist behind a counter at a community pharmacy. But as we know, pharmacists work in all kinds of practice settings–and that includes thousands of pharmacists in hospitals and other health-system environments.
Their challenges are both similar to and different from community pharmacists.
Last year, APhA created a special council to discuss health-system pharmacy issues, and to advise the association on how to serve pharmacists in those settings.
Our guests are the council’s co-chairs: Steve Rough, from the nationwide pharmacy consulting firm Visante, and Noelle Chapman, from Advocate Aurora Health in Chicago.

Opioid Madness Pt. 1 | PAIN POD
Friday Mar 26, 2021
Friday Mar 26, 2021
March Madness is upon us, and what better time, than during a pandemic, to dive into “OPIOID MADNESS”!!!
In this episode of the “PAIN POD”, Mark “Pain Guy” Garofoli will talk us through an opioid bracketology, perhaps an “Opioidology”, but definitely a whole bunch of “Opioid Madness”, in order to pit one opioid against another. A battle of poppy versus poppy, and of course a bunch of man-made opioid opponents as well. Cool names and fancy formulations only get one so far, and we simply have no room for bias, thus pharmacology will rule as law of the land, to ultimately crown, “THE GREATEST OPIOID OF ALL TIME”.
We’ll start with a “Sweet 16” of opioids, mention a few bubble busting first four out, and navigate our way through the “Elite 8” and “Final 4” to culminate in a blood thirsty, constipating, yet definitely not sedating championship opioid brawl. One opioid, an opioid of all opioids, will remain standing atop the mountain of Mu, declaring its victory over all other opioids from all lands near and far. Just as Rocky Balboa declared his presence on top of the mountains of Russia, there will remain one opioid for all ages. Yet, all this opioid bracketology madness may not be the main point after all, tune in today to enjoy a brief journey through all things opioids, and learn more about what this madness is actually all about. Let the brackets begin!!!

The Prescription of Comedy | Pharmacy Podcast Nation
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
We need to laugh more. Pharmacists & Pharmacy Techs are under tremendous stress. This episode is about two amazing Healthcare Providers who are also professional comedians. Listen, laugh, and share.
Dr. Will Flanary is an ophthalmologist, writer, and comedian who moonlights in his free time as “Dr. Glaucomflecken,” a top hat wearing, mustachioed cartoon ophthalmoscope who has become a leading voice in ophthalmology and healthcare on social media. Effortlessly blending humor with education, Dr. Glaucomflecken has spent the last 5 years informing audiences on a wide range of topics, from navigating the confusing world of over-the-counter eyedrops to his own experiences as a patient in the healthcare system, all with his characteristic acerbic wit.

Dr. Maurice Shaw is a stand-up comedian from Chicago, IL. Dr. Shaw attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for undergrad then went on to earn his doctorate of pharmacy from Chicago State University College of Pharmacy. If that wasn't enough, Dr. Shaw completed a PGY1 community pharmacy residency with the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. It was his ability to make his patients laugh on a daily basis that made him decide that maybe stand-up comedy was his calling.
Maurice is a clinical pharmacist AND a professional stand-up comedian has been making his audiences feel good with his hilarious too-funny-not-to-be-true, clean comedy material. Dr. Shaw has been rocking audiences in major comedy clubs throughout the Midwest routinely featuring and headlining at Zanies, Laugh Factory Chicago, Donnie B's and the Comedy Shrine. He has been features in the PharmacyTimes and the NewYork Times articles and also performs at conventions and pharmaceutical events as well. His hilarious YouTube channel RXComedy has over 1.5 million views and his videos are watched in several different countries across the world
Maurice's experiences of being a pharmacist and a pharmacy manager in some of Chicago's most dangerous neighborhoods, being a retail pharmacist during Covid and helping with the vaccination efforts at Long Term Care facilities makes his comedy routine very unique and must see comedy.

Wednesday Mar 24, 2021
In this episode, Jeremy and Jessica speak with Dr. Shane Desselle, RPh, PhD, FAPhA from Touro University California College of Pharmacy and Dr. Kenneth Hohmeier, Pharm.D. from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy about their ongoing research in pharmacy technician workforce issues.
As more and more attention is being paid to the work pharmacy technicians do, and the instant change in scope of practice brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Drs. Desselle and Hohmeier’s work is particularly apropos. They discuss their published paper, “Exploring the implementation of a novel optimizing care model in the community pharmacy setting,” for which they were awarded the 2020 Wiederholt Prize by the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association.
The paper explores the positive impact technician product verification can have on enhancing patient care delivery, as well as successes and concerns with implementing such a model.

Proven Ways to Market Your Pharmacy | Pharmacy Crossroads
Monday Mar 22, 2021
Monday Mar 22, 2021
Ask any pharmacy owner what the best form of advertising is and they’ll immediately reply, “Word of Mouth.” In this episode of PharmacyCrossRoads Bruce Kneeland shares several real live examples of what a pharmacy can do to dramatically increase the number of referrals patients provide. He also cautions that unless a pharmacy takes an active role in boosting word-of-mouth the natural tendency of people is to talk more about bad experience than good. The good news is, effectively handling things that go wrong can be one of the best ways to generate positive word of mouth.
Kneeland is interviewed by Robyn Amberg, a well-respected account manager for PrescribeWellness, a Tabula Rasa Healthcare company who introduces herself as Robyn Kneeland Amberg. She is Bruce’s oldest daughter and has garnered a well-deserved reputation as an industry expert in her own right.
The podcast covers a variety of topics intended to help pharmacy owners generate more positive word-of-mouth referrals. Kneeland and Amberg share ideas and examples of things they have seen pharmacies do. They also discuss the importance of getting pharmacy staff engaged in the mission of the pharmacy and talk about the importance of having a noble cause and the owner being able to create a culture of caring and commitment among the pharmacy employees.
Kneeland indicates he has digital copies of articles he has written and samples of customer referral card programs he is willing to share with listeners that request them via email: BFKneeland@gmail.com

The Evolution of Education in Pharmacy | Pharmacy Podcast Nation
Friday Mar 19, 2021
Friday Mar 19, 2021
Today's special guest is Christopher M. Bland, Pharm.D., FCCP, FIDSA, BCPS Clinical Associate Professor at The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy.
As country after country imposed partial or total lockdowns in February and March, in 2020, the number of universities and colleges closing down their campus, interrupting face-to face activities, and switching to e-learning soared on a daily basis, eventually affecting more than 200 million students globally.
However, few of these institutions were well prepared for the sudden, disruptive move. A lot of scrambling, improvisation, and continuous adaptation have occurred as administrators, academics, and students struggle to implement online learning.
Impact on Students. The abrupt closure of campuses and the rapid switch to online education have disrupted students’ lives all over the world. It’s no surprise that students from underrepresented groups (low-income students, girls and women, members of minority groups, and students with special needs) have been hit especially hard—economically, emotionally, and in terms of digital deprivation. In poorer countries, students from disadvantaged groups face even greater difficulties.

Jason Dykstra Chino Valley Pharmacy | Pharmacy CrossRoads
Thursday Mar 11, 2021
Thursday Mar 11, 2021
In the summer of 2016, Jason Dykstra, PharmD. took the leap of faith and left his long-time position with a major grocery store pharmacy chain and opened his own independent pharmacy. In this episode Dykstra talks about how he made this decision and shares several tips on what he has done to become successful so quickly.
In this 30-minute podcast Dykstra talks about how he and his wife worked together to create a pharmacy that was both functional and appealing. The décor, layout and front-end product selection were all done with an eye towards making the pharmacy appealing and to provide items not easily sold by his chain competition. This even included a special children’s play area.
Dykstra discusses the importance of carefully monitoring inventory. He also talks about how he often works with prescribers to help patients get a comparable medication at a lower co-pay; while, also often improving his margin. Dykstra points out that pharmacy is both a business and a profession and emphasizes that, as an owner, “If you can’t keep the doors open then the people you care for won’t benefit from the care you provide.”
Included are comments on a specific vendor he uses to search for better prices from a variety of suppliers. He also talks about how important it is to know who your “key” customers are and coaching the staff on how to make sure these people are well taken care of as they not only purchase more, and more profitable items but they are the people who tell others about how great your pharmacy is.
Jason’s success with his first independent pharmacy has gone so well that in Dec. 2020 he opened a second location about 20 miles away in another rural community and has already started the process of getting permits to refurbish a building in a third town with hopes of opening a pharmacy there late in 2021.
