Introducing Bruce Kneeland; The Road Trip Guy | Pharmacy CrossRoads
Friday Oct 23, 2020

Pharmacy CrossRoads Interview Sheet
Podcast #3 – Introducing Bruce Kneeland; The Road Trip Guy
In the Third Episode of the brand-new podcast series called Pharmacy CrossRoads, Todd Eury, founder and CEO of The Pharmacy Podcast Network Interviews Pharmacy CrossRoads host Bruce Kneeland. Kneeland talks about how he became the Road Trip guy, and explains just what a road trip entrails. We think you’ll be surprised at how much work goes into organizing one. More importantly Kneeland tells us for of the key pharmacy success principles has distilled from the hundreds of interviews he has held with pharmacy owners all across the country. .
So, Bruce, to start can you provide a brief overview of your career in pharmacy - who are you, and what brought you to this point?
Whew, so, that’s a lot of jobs – how did all of that lead to becoming The Road Trip guy
What are the biggest take ways that apply to our listeners today – you know – with low reimbursement, egregious audits, DIR fees, mail order, etc. What have you learned that will help pharmacy owners today?
Do something other than pharmacy and do it exceptionally well
Atmosphere, ambiance, looks matters
Most people won’t, but a few will pay
Have a “can do” attitude. Grit
Management matters
Have a noble purpose
Sell you staff
Delegate
Be flexible, try new things, fail forward
So what is a road trip – do you just get in your car and take off and drop in on pharmacies
Have an idea, theme
Get magazine to cover
Find a sponsor
Search for exceptional pharmacies
Not all pharmacies get to be those that work with the sponsor
Separated by about 200-300 miles, leap frog
Not doing the same thing – something special
Call to see if they will, a few won’t or can’t
Schedule the visit
Make travel arrangements

Coalition for the Advancement of Pharmacy Technician Practice | OnScript
Tuesday Oct 20, 2020
Tuesday Oct 20, 2020
2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, but especially for healthcare workers on the front lines. Due to this, it’s more important now than ever, that pharmacy technicians practice at the very top of their license. While boards of pharmacy have traditionally limited pharmacy technician practice from performing such tasks like final product verification, administering immunizations to patients, or performing CLIA-waived point of care testing, more and more states are undergoing the process of reviewing, discussing, and in some cases changes their rules to permit properly trained technicians to perform these and other tasks. To further seize on this trend, NHA has spearheaded an initiative to bring together representatives from some of the biggest pharmacy organizations in the industry.
The initiative, The Coalition for the Advancement of Pharmacy Technician Practice, aims to work together to stay up to date with current state boards of pharmacy that are discussing this very important topic, and to engage other state boards of pharmacy to consider broadening pharmacy technician scope of practice. By bringing together retail pharmacy giants like Albertsons Companies, Walmart, Kroger and Walgreens, along with state pharmacy associations, pharmacy academicians, and organizations such as the Pharmacy Technician Educators Council, the coalition’s collective voice and singular mission is to further expedite the spread of states allowing pharmacy technicians to do more. This support from the industry will be key to continuing to elevate the pharmacy profession across the nation.
In this episode, OnScript brings together representatives from some of the coalition’s partnering organizations to discuss the importance of expanding pharmacy technician roles and the positive impact that has been realized in those states that have already expanded pharmacy technician practice. It is fitting and timely that this discussion happen on Pharmacy Technician’s Day to show pharmacy technicians that the industry recognizes the important role they play in all pharmacies and how critical it is to advocate and be an additional voice for the technician workforce, and also pass on the gratitude that each of these organizations have for the work technicians are doing everyday. You don’t want to miss this episode!

Pharmacists Focused on Mental Health | Our Children
Thursday Oct 08, 2020
Thursday Oct 08, 2020
Q: What might parents and teachers expect to see regarding children’s mental health as they begin school this fall?
A: Worry or anxiety during this period would be expected and is a normal response. Children’s adjustment to the new school format, whether it’s remote or hybrid, would vary a lot based on age and a child’s individual personality or temperament, as well as the family’s overall experience of the pandemic. Both the disease aspects of the pandemic and also the economic stressors—if a parent or caregiver has lost a job, if there has been income or residential instability—are all part of the child’s experience and will play a role in the child’s adjustment. Some children could be experiencing the pandemic as a traumatic event—for instance if they’ve lost a grandparent or a loved one to COVID complications.
In younger kids, psychological distress might manifest as new or worsening behavioral problems, difficulty separating from parents or caregivers, or somatic symptoms such as aches and pains or changes in sleep or appetite. Older kids can also experience somatic symptoms, as well as fear, nervousness, stress, irritability, and hypervigilance. In the academic context, symptoms could include difficulty concentrating, difficulty with motivation, or school refusal.
A recent study in the U.S. that surveyed parents suggests that about 27% of parents and roughly 14% of children are experiencing worsening mental health problems during the pandemic. Rates of distress were highest among families with young children, who may have lost access to child care, and among single-parent families. We also know that some communities or subgroups have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, including underresourced or minority communities, and children in these communities may be at higher risk for mental health concerns. Also, children with preexisting mental health concerns, children who have learning disabilities or any other challenges that have required individualized learning plans, and children with medical vulnerabilities may experience greater adjustment issues or mental health concerns at this time.
