Spirituality in Medicine | Transforming a Nation
Wednesday Sep 09, 2020
Wednesday Sep 09, 2020
Dr. Richard Harris M.D., Pharm.D, MBA joins the 'Transforming the Nation' series to discuss the controversial topic of sharing your faith, being spiritual, and understanding the balance between science, medicine, and God. Dr. Harris is the founder of "Great Health & Wellness" and has his own podcast, here: https://www.theghwellness.com/
The technological advances of the past century tended to change the focus of medicine from a caring, service oriented model to a technological, cure-oriented model. Technology has led to phenomenal advances in medicine and has given us the ability to prolong life. However, in the past few decades physicians have attempted to balance their care by reclaiming medicine's more spiritual roots, recognizing that until modern times spirituality was often linked with health care. Spiritual or compassionate care involves serving the whole person—the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. Such service is inherently a spiritual activity. Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, who has developed Commonweal retreats for people with cancer, described it well:
Helping, fixing, and serving represent three different ways of seeing life. When you help, you see life as weak. When you fix, you see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as whole. Fixing and helping may be the work of the ego, and service the work of the soul.
Serving patients may involve spending time with them, holding their hands, and talking about what is important to them. Patients value these experiences with their physicians. In this article, I discuss elements of compassionate care, review some research on the role of spirituality in health care, highlight advantages of understanding patients' spirituality, explain ways to practice spiritual care, and summarize some national efforts to incorporate spirituality into medicine.

Community Pharmacies are vital members of neighborhoods and the healthcare community. A major social determinant of health is access to healthcare - both providers and medications. Guest Jake Galdo will be joining our host Geoff Wall to discuss how community pharmacists provide care.

The path that a student embarks on is often very different from the career path they ultimately follow. ACPHS class of ’94 grad Kelly Mahar is a prime example. Kelly planned on becoming a retail pharmacist and she knew that there were lots of attractive jobs open in the field. But during her coursework and internships at ACPHS, Kelly started to notice her strengths and interests lay elsewhere. In this episode of Occupation Station hear how Kelly was able to put her degree from ACPHS into lucrative service to support her new goal to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Buffalo.
Diverging from her original path moved her toward the highly specialized work that she currently does at GlaxoSmithKline. It’s work that she finds to be a perfect fit. Now she encourages students to reach out to alumni to learn more about career opportunities that can grow out of their studies at ACPHS.

Taking Care of Yourself First | Ashley Dwyer PharmD
Thursday Aug 27, 2020
Thursday Aug 27, 2020
Why Taking Care of Yourself First is so important to being the best healthcare provider possible. A special interview with a mission driven pharmacist who believes in helping other busy professionals on their life's journey.
"Customization Creates Confidence" -- Ashley Dwyer, PharmD.
Connect w/ Ashley on Instagram:
https://www.instagram.com/dr.dwyer/?hl=en
WEBSITE: https://thebigdaynutrition.com/about-me/
Ashley writes:
It all started back in grade school, where I thrived as a mathlete and science nerd, but also as a little tomboy trying to beat the boys on the blacktop.
My love for math, science, and sports propelled me through high school, where I played on several varsity sports teams, was a member of the math honor society, and where I chose my career as a health professional.
After seven long years at the University of Florida, I graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacology. Becoming a pharmacist allowed me to live out one of my passions: helping others.
It wasn’t until I was halfway through pharmacy school that I discovered my other passion: health and fitness.
After my first year of pharmacy school, I came home for summer break and met friends who were competing in NPC bikini bodybuilding competitions. I had never even heard of these or knew they existed for “normal” people like me.
After learning the details of the competitions, my competitive nature took over, and I absolutely HAD to compete in one! After 17 weeks of intense training and dieting, I took first place in my category in my very first competition; I was hooked.
Fast forward three years and three more competitions, I decided it was time to box up my bedazzled bikini. The amount of knowledge I gained as a competitor, on and off season, is invaluable.
Self-control, discipline, fitness know-how, and proper nutrition are just a few of the key elements I learned along my NPC journey.
What I also discovered was that competitions aren’t really as healthy as one would think.
Sure, I had a veiny 6-pack and practically no body fat, but I was also super fatigued and irritable.
I looked amazing, but had no energy to go out and “show it off.”
It was time to switch off the competing mindset and start focusing on creating a balance between looking good and feeling good.
Not only did I do this for myself, but for my patients, peers, friends, and family.
The wealth of knowledge from my past endeavors lead me to be the one they sought out for diet advice and tips for weight loss, and workout routines.
Couple this with the fact that I was nearing 30 and ALL of my girlfriends were getting married; my expertise was heavily desired. I was ecstatic to be helping people I loved in an area I was super passionate about.
My biggest addiction?
The glow of confidence and gratification my client’s radiate as they walk down the aisle, look in the mirror and pose for pictures.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about ME! I can’t wait to learn more about all of you and help you radiate that same glow!
I do not believe in cookie cutter plans, fad diets, or crash dieting. I believe in giving you the tools to achieve your goals.
By creating custom-made diet and exercise plans based on your current state and resources, it allows for a smooth transition and an even easier desire to stick to your plan.
Confidence will stem in many ways, but I find these three avenues to be the most popular:
1. You will feel confident and in control knowing you have all the tools necessary to unlock your potential.
2. You will feel confident knowing I will be there 100% of the way fine-tuning your plan, providing motivation, and keeping you accountable.
3. When that Big Day arrives, you will glow with confidence due to your achievements.
Your Big Day deserves your best you. What are you waiting for?!

Pharmacy Ownership and Leadership Academy | First Financial Bank
Wednesday Aug 26, 2020
Wednesday Aug 26, 2020
Today's podcast is part 2 of the second series from the team at First Financial Bank's Pharmacy & Veterinary Divisions. Today we talk with Drew Hegi, MBA Loan Officer at First Financial Bank and Schwanda Flowers, PharmD Veterinary Practice Lender at First Financial Bank.
On this episode we learn about:
What is POLA?
How and when did POLA start?
What are the benefits of participating in POLA?
How much does it cost to attend?
What topics and activities do you cover at POLA?
How can interested students and colleges get more information about attending?
About P.O.L.A.
Opportunity is on the horizon for student pharmacists interested in ownership. With an aging demographic of independent pharmacy owners, there has never been a better time to consider ownership.
The Pharmacy Ownership and Leadership Academy (POLA) was developed to prepare student pharmacists for this exact opportunity. Twenty-five students from eleven colleges of pharmacy across the country arrived at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy on June 17th for a week long academy focused on leadership, personal and professional development, pharmacy financials, business planning and team building. The week began with assessing the attendees entrepreneurial spirit, leadership styles and emotional intelligence.
They were welcomed with a picnic sponsored by First Financial Bank and had the opportunity to get to know each other and network with a team of lenders who truly understand pharmacy. The second day was a huge success; programming focused on writing a business plan, pharmacy lending, tools and support from the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), and ended with a networking dinner with current Arkansas pharmacy owners. Students had the opportunity to connect with a professional mentor who can provide real-world advice and encouragement for these young entrepreneurs. Days three and four provided unique sessions on marketing, Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network (CPESN), and developing a vision for your business.

Back to School Marketing | Pharmacy Marketing Simplified
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Monday Aug 24, 2020
September is just around the corner, and Labor Day cookouts are mere days away. While this celebration marks the relative end of the summer, for the kids in your life, it also means it’s time to go back to school.
Emotions are high this time of year. Kids want to make a good impression, sporting the latest fashions and newest gear to impress their friends. Their parents, in turn, want to make sure they’re prepared with enough food and the right supplies to make it through their day.
Pharmacy Owners should be equally energized. Back-to-school season is a big deal in this country: In previous years, retailers saw roughly $828 billion in sales during the back-to-school season. Right now the only retail holiday bringing in more cash in the U.S. is the so-called “winter holiday” where holly jolly gift-giving frenzies dominate buying patterns.
So when does this holiday officially start? Some brands begin their marketing campaigns as early as July, not long after those Independence Day fireworks fizzle out. That’s partly because there’s no standard school start date in the U.S. Some districts in Arizona, for example, begin as early as mid July. Students in Boston, however, won’t be boarding their school buses until early September.
