World Diabetes Day 2020 | Pharmacy Podcast Nation
Saturday Nov 14, 2020
Saturday Nov 14, 2020
World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. It is marked every year on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.
WDD is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign reaching a global audience of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public and political spotlight.
The World Diabetes Day campaign aims to be the:
Platform to promote IDF advocacy efforts throughout the year.
Global driver to promote the importance of taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue
The campaign is represented by a blue circle logo that was adopted in 2007 after the passage of the UN Resolution on diabetes. The blue circle is the global symbol for diabetes awareness. It signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes epidemic.
Every year, the World Diabetes Day campaign focuses on a dedicated theme that runs for one or more years. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2020 is The Nurse and Diabetes. Messaging and materials will start to be made available during the second quarter of 2020.

Technology Advances Improving Workflow Accuracy During COVID & Beyond | DrFirst
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Like physicians, pharmacists often have to spend a lot of time on administrative tasks that take away from patient interaction, and in the case of pharmacists, sometimes, these tasks can also introduce potential for errors that can threaten patient safety.
In an interview, Heidi Polek, strategic program manager, DrFirst, and Christopher Antypas, owner and president, Asti’s Pharmacy, can address some of these tasks and how technology is making a difference in the pharmacist workflow.
Heidi delves into the potential for errors at the start of the pharmacy workflow (especially amid high volumes) and how new technology (with AI) can help by accurately identifying details of an incoming prescription as well as matching the prescription to the drugs on a pharmacy’s shelves.
Chris discusses best practices for efficient and secure communication, which has become even more critical amid the COVID pandemic as patients do not visit as often and as some pharmacies close their doors to walk-ins. Chris will shares perspective as a practicing pharmacist and how he has leveraged communication tools - like Backline, a secure communication tool (provided by DrFirst) - and other strategies and techniques - during COVID to stay in touch with patients as well as providers.
Our Guests:
Heidi Polek, Strategic Program Manager for DrFirst
Heidi is a registered pharmacist with 30 years of experience, including extensive community pharmacy work in WNY where she managed patient care plans, administered immunizations, and worked closely with area practitioners on patient care initiatives. She was a leader in establishing area Drug Take Back events across eight WNY counties, working closely with the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and the DEA to provide staffing and support for their bi-annual events. Heidi is a past Board Member of the Pharmacist’s Association of WNY and has actively participated in multiple committees of the Maryland Pharmacist Association. Currently, Heidi is a Strategic Program Manager for DrFirst, a leading provider of innovative technology solutions that connect healthcare touchpoints. Educational Marketing during Flu Season | Pharmacy Marketing Simplified
Thursday Oct 29, 2020
Thursday Oct 29, 2020
New flexibilities in delivering flu vaccinations could be a ‘game-changer’, but without them, pharmacies may struggle to run a flu vaccination program at all this winter.
Pharmacies are preparing for what is expected to be a surge in flu vaccinations this year as Americans are putting a greater focus on staying healthy amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Pharmacies are preparing for what is expected to be a surge in flu vaccinations this year as Americans are putting a greater focus on staying healthy amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In anticipation of that double whammy of flu and covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, flu vaccine manufacturers have boosted production by about 15 percent, to record levels, with nearly 200 million doses for the United States. During the 2019-2020 flu season, more than the 175 million doses were churned out, industry officials said.
